The 2023 edition of the annual AUDE Higher Education Estates Management Report is now available to AUDE members. The data included covers the period August 2021 to July 2022. As with every year’s report, it is vital to get a grasp on the timeline. This period covers the second disrupted Christmas of the pandemic, a period when we remained at a high level of concern about Covid-safety on campus, with an unprecedented focus on how to both heat/cool and ventilate our buildings cost effectively. Energy prices spiked from the autumn of 2021; the invasion of Ukraine made this issue even worse, and for many universities this was a period where energy supply plans developed over a long period were severely tested.

With the publication of the new 'Cost of Net Zero' report and accompanying cost calculator tool, university estates directors not only have a means to calculate the overall likely cost of bringing the estate to net zero carbon, but a checklist of the kinds of activity that will need to be prioritised. As society changes we must lead that change, for instance in our support for lower carbon cost transport, electrification and the decarbonisation of the electricity supply. For those who haven’t yet started down this path, this is a good place to start, including for those who don’t want the expense of external consultancy support. For those that already have a map of where they are going and how much it will costs them this will help them sense check along the way.
Our new publication ‘The use and impact of technology on FM service provision in universities’, is the report of the July 2023 roundtable discussion held with colleagues from our Strategic Facilities Management Group (led by Lucy Black of the University of Plymouth), and representatives from partner organisations including Sodexo, OCS and Skanska. As Lucy Black explains in the document, ‘the Strategic FM group within AUDE commissioned a review into the use of technology in delivering FM services in the Higher Education sector.’ The roundtable event looked at three main headings, namely FM service delivery challenges; the development of new technologies; and their subsequent adoption.
