AUDE Toolkit for a Sustainable Estate
June 2011. An updated version of the Model of Estates Costs (MEC) is now available from the link at the bottom of this page.
The AUDE Toolkit for a Sustainable Estate consists of tools and guidance, available on this website (see below) and via a link from the SMG website.
The Toolkit contents are:
- Foreword and Introduction (pdf)
- A Model of Estate Costs (MEC) and User Guide. Predicted annualised costs are expressed financially and in terms of notional carbon emissions.
- A series of examples of Space Assessment Models (SAMs) and Guidance on how to use them, together with advice on how to develop an institutional space profile.
Below is the MEC 2011 as a separate file and the November 2010 update of the SAM and User guide.
A password is required to open the models. Due to the fact they contain EMS data, the old Model and new MEC are only available to UK Higher Education Directors of Estates (or equivalent). Please e-mail Bernard Dromgoole (HEFCE) (b.dromgoole@hefce.ac.uk) or Suzanne Irwin (AUDE) (sirwin@essex.ac.uk) to apply for your password.
More about the project. The project, which began in 2009, was set up to improve the tools available to institutions for the management of space in the higher education sector, in line with the national agenda towards greater financial and environmental sustainability. It was supported by HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW, DEL and the HEFCE’s Leadership, Governance and Management (LGM) Fund.
The project set out to further develop tools/models originating from the SMG (Space Management Group) work which took place from 2003 to 2007 (see below).
A project steering group was established, chaired by Rod Mallinder, formerly Director of Estate and Facilties Management at the University of Brighton and AUDE Secretary. The group included Directors of Estates, space management practitioners and representatives from the UK funding councils.
Consultants Kilner Planning (Sian Kilner) and London Economics (Patrice Muller and Rohan Chindooroy) were appointed to carry out the project work.
The original Space Management Group (SMG) for higher education was set up in 2003/4. Its main work programme concluded in 2007/8. The project produced a variety of good practice reports and recommendations, along with case studies and a tools for institutions to use. See the project web site for more information: http://www.smg.ac.uk/
