A Guide to UK League Tables in Higher Education

11 January 2018      Cheryl Pick, Projects and Engagement Manager

Our colleagues at HESPA, along with the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) have worked together to produce the report below on league tables, written by Sally Turnbull, Head of Planning and Insight at the University of Central Lancashire, a member of the HESPA Executive Committee and Chair of HESPA’s Higher Education Data Insight Group.

In discussing with Nick Hillman the broad influence of league tables on the sector as a whole, it was noted that there appeared to be a gap in knowledge about them at the most senior level. Vice-chancellors are held to account for their university’s position in league tables by governing bodies who often know very little about how these tables are compiled. HESPA and HEPI therefore agreed to co-produce a widely relevant and accessible report which, without being overly technical and too detailed in its approach, would provide enough information to help close this gap. It is intended as a handy guide for vice-chancellors and other senior staff who are interested in league table results, but who know very little about how they are compiled, their differences, strengths and weaknesses.
