Our universities did not close. And they stayed open because of cleaning teams doing double shifts, and volunteering in NHS hospitals to learn the strictest new sanitation standards. They stayed open because our teams adapted, learnt new skills, and volunteered to do whatever needed doing. They stayed open because we played our part in our communities, providing accommodation for key workers who couldn’t safely return home each evening because of the risk of the virus. They stayed open as our teams delivered food parcels and pastoral support to isolating students. They stayed open as we configured and reconfigured our campuses to allow for social distancing. And by staying open we were able to play our vital role in the national response to an unprecedented situation.
