Covid and ventilation: new briefing note

24 September 2021      Martin Higgs, Communications Officer

That the HSE, CIBSE and USHA have all issued or reviewed guidance on ventilation in the last 6 weeks speaks to the degree to which this issue has overtaken the implementation of social distancing measures as the leading cause of Covid-related concern within estates teams. The specific documents in their current versions can be found at:

HSE: Ventilation and air conditioning during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

CIBSE: Covid-19 Ventilation (version 5)

USHA: Ventilation as a control measure in managing the spread of Covid-19

While there is no substitute for AUDE members reading and understanding these documents themselves, we are conscious that there is scope for interpretation in technical documents and that this in turn can lead to confusion. This AUDE Briefing Note (download link) does not attempt to act as “advice” on technical issues the detail of which is beyond our remit. But we are aiming to help AUDE directors of estates/members to think through the issues raised so that they can:

  • be confident that ventilation is legally compliant and has taken on the current Covid context
  • establish a logical and robust plan for ventilation across the entire estate which can be explained and justified if subject to internal challenge – and which can command support from staff and students.
