AUDE Summer School 2025 Cohort
The AUDE Summer School took place on 9 - 12 June 2025, University of Plymouth (THE Outstanding Estates Team of the Year campus).
This residential programme nurtures emerging talent in higher education estates and facilities management. Delegates hear from current estates directors and sector experts on key topical areas of estates and facilities management.
Delegates were assigned to groups on the first day of the residential and remained in their groups for the duration of the summer school residential programme.
Group presentations will take place on Wednesday 26 November 2025 and the winning group will be announced shortly after this.
The Group Project works consists of:
Group Project – four territories to explore
This year AUDE gave the groups a choice from two projects which are detailed below:
PROJECT ONE
Implementing an energy-saving plan is crucial for reducing facility operating costs across campus based higher education facilities. This can be accomplished by using context-aware technology to monitor occupancy levels and real-time hotspots, resulting in a reduction in excessive maintenance. Since buildings are responsible for nearly 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, technology plays a pivotal role in achieving sustainability.
To enhance corporate sustainability efforts, it’s imperative to proactively monitor building energy consumption through facilities management technology. Through detailed facility mapping, facility managers can identify trends in energy usage and optimize lighting, HVAC and other factors. Doing this increases energy savings and minimizes environmental impacts.
This project presents the opportunity to identify across HEI’s both in the UK and internationally examples of best practice from those institutions who are leading the way in establishing a road map to Net Zero as well as associated potential revenue savings
PROJECT TWO
The changing world of business and technology is giving facility managers more data than ever. With the insight this data provides, they will be able to make smarter and quicker decisions that enhance facility, campus services and estate operations. To stay ahead, using this data for everything from space management to proactive maintenance will be key.
When it comes to the effective management of available space, reliable usage data will be an invaluable asset. By understanding the trends in space usage, managers can better allocate resources, increase employee productivity and reduce costs, all while improving efficiency and sustainability efforts. Additionally, it empowers facilities managers to prioritise maintenance tasks, allocate resources more effectively and improve the safety and comfort of building occupants. Data-driven decision making won’t be just about streamlining operations. It will define the future of higher education estates management.
This project presents the opportunity to identify across HEI’s both in the UK and internationally examples of best practice from those institutions who are leading the way in data driven space management. It will identify the strategic and operational benefits institutions can gain from this approach.
